Data modeling is one of the business entities, which when used properly by the company’s IT department can deliver enormous amount of benefits to any business enterprise, which include:

  • Reduced costs and increased revenues
  • Elimination of redundant and unneeded information
  • Better identification of products, profit and cost centers
  • Robust information systems
  • Easier access to that information
  • Higher quality information for all business activities

Given below are a few fundamental rules to guide the users on how and where to start from.

The same sources must be used to extract the information for the Data modeling of the business functions in order to maintain the relevancy.

  1. Data which is needed to support the Business functions of the enterprise directly must be modeled.

The Integrated Modelling Method provides an effective technique in order to extract the individual entities, relationships and attributes from the various sources from which the extraction of the Business Functions were done. This technique can be utilized by the experienced analysts and the novice alike.

The basic technique:

  1. Working through the data sources that a person is looking for and underlining the “noun structures” as they are also the “candidate” entities.
  2. All the candidate data and all the associations between them are then extracted into a separate document.
  3. Conversion of the candidate entities and all their associations to the actual entities, relationships and attributes then take place.
  4. Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is then built.
  5. The required relational databases are then designed from the ERD.

Rationalizing Entities

Removal of the spurious or false entities is required to be done from the list of candidate entities. Any kind of “invoice” falls in the list. It is actually a piece of paper which represents a business entity or a collection of entities such as a sale or any other kind of billing. The sale and billings are the entities which actually need to be modeled.

Converting Associations to Relationships

The associations which are identified must also be rationalized and converted into the “relationships” so that they can form the meaningful information. Associations are simply used as the means of projection of the two entities and then define them using a suitable name. A relationship is used to portray all the necessary information that is needed to know about the association. This includes –

  • the exact name of the relationship
  • whether it is compulsory or optional
  • The "degree" of association that if is one-to-one, one-to-many or many-to-many.
